Darcy

Certified Bikram Instructor

Take 2…

When I was in junior high, I broke my answering machine trying to leave the perfect message, over and over and over again… If the yoga has taught me anything, then I should be able to “let it go”, stop being such a type A perfectionist and just write this thing!

I feel like people that have practiced yoga with me probably already know me pretty well. Maybe you don’t know the details of my life, but you know me. But Jeanette wanted me to write a piece to fill in some of the details and let folks get to know a little bit more about me.

Folks at the studio know me as a fairly new Bikram yoga instructor. I went to my teacher training last fall and have been fortunate to have found the support that I have at our studio to grow as a teacher. James and I have both been practicing Bikram yoga for over 3 years. We both started the yoga at around the same time we started dating. The yoga has been central to our relationship and has given us strength and patience when we need it. Our family has evolved into a nice little world that includes the both of us, his three kids, my dogs and cat, and now a baby coming next spring. Can’t complain!

My day job is working as a Physician Assistant in a Breast Care Center. I’ve been working in general and oncologic (cancer) surgery for about 6 years and am quite happy with my current position. I have the opportunity to work with patients dealing with all types of breast issues. My day to day usually involves either seeing patients in the clinic or assisting in the operating room. Fortunately, my hours allow me to get in a yoga class most days.

I can’t imagine what my life would look like without yoga. My first experiences with yoga included watching a borrowed yoga video and taking random classes at the gym. Over the years my practice became more regular and structured. I started taking Ashtanga yoga classes and this was my first experience with daily practice. In an effort to maintain a daily practice between my Ashtanga classes, I stumbled into a Bikram beginning yoga class and continued to practice a couple times a week for about 2 years of overlapping practice. Initially, I considered Bikram yoga to be my “filler” class. With time, I was found myself doing more and more Bikram classes. One of my instructors suggested I go to Bikram’s Advanced Seminar. Learning from the man himself and being surrounded by a couple hundred hard core yogis and yoga teachers was an incredible experience. At that point, it became obvious to me that I wanted to become a Bikram yoga instructor. It took another year before I could put together the money and time off to go to teacher training. The experience there was life changing and eye opening. The growth and amazement continues as I teach and take my classes each day. My fellow students and teachers inspire me on a daily basis. This yoga and our community have given me a more balanced mind and body – which I have been seeking throughout my life.

Stay strong! See you on the mat. Namaste.
